Chair of the Committee, John Paul Phelan TD said: “As part of our work in examining ways in which the Houses of the Oireachtas and its Committees can engage in the budgetary process so as to exercise influence and achieve accountability, the Committee will hear from representatives from the ESRI and the Fiscal Council. The ESRI is Ireland’s independent source of evidence for policy, while the the Irish Fiscal Advisory Council is an independent statutory body whose purpose is to provide an independent assessment of official budgetary forecasts and proposed fiscal policy objectives. Tomorrow we will get both organisations’ perspectives on the manner in which the Oireachtas exercises oversight on budgetary matters, the roles of the Budget oversight and sectoral committees in the budget cycle and on proposed reforms to the Budgetary process. We are also meeting Robert Chote, Chairman of the Office of Budget Responsibility in the House of Commons who will outline the role of his Office especially in the context of costing budget proposals. His contribution is directly relevant to recommendations the Committee will make in respect of the Independent Parliamentary Budget Office.”

Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
