Foreign Affairs Committee to hear from Minister Flanagan on the work of the Foreign Affairs Council

The Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence will tomorrow meet as both a Joint and Select Committee to consider matters under their remit. The Joint Committee will discuss matters considered by the Foreign Affairs Council and other matters relating to foreign affairs and trade with Minister Charlie Flanagan TD.

Before this, the Select Committee will meet to discuss the Framework Agreement on Comprehensive Partnership and Cooperation between the European Union and its Member States, of the one part, and Mongolia, of the other part with Minister Flanagan.

The Select meeting will commence at 9.00am in Committee Room 1 tomorrow, Thursday, 25 May 2017. The Joint Committee will then follow at 10.00am in Committee Room 1.

Committee Chairman, Brendan Smith TD, said “Tomorrow we will have the opportunity to hear a further update from Minister Flanagan on the work of the Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) of the European Union. Some of the items included on the agenda of the FAC most recently include the upcoming Africa-EU Summit, the continuing conflict in Syria, the EU response to the migration crisis and the future relationship between the EU and Turkey. An important part of this Committee’s remit is to work closely with the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence, and to be briefed on how Ireland is being represented internationally, and so this is an important meeting in this regard.”

“As a Select Committee we will also discuss, with Minister Flanagan, the Framework Agreement on Comprehensive Partnership and Cooperation between EU Member States and Mongolia.”
