Irish Language Committee to discuss issues facing Irish language broadcasters

29 May 2017, 09:58

The Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands will focus on the issues facing Irish language broadcasters at its meeting tomorrow, Tuesday 30 May 2017.

Chairperson of the Committee Catherine Connolly TD: “Tomorrow the Committee will meet with the representatives of Raidió na Life, Baile Átha Cliath, Raidió Fáilte, Béal Feirste and Raidió na dTreabh, An Gaillimh to consider the challenges facing radio stations broadcasting in the Irish language.

Despite advances in technology and media, radio remains one of the most pervasive means of communication in modern Ireland especially among young people. It is a medium of entertainment, music, discussion and opinion formation. Therefore it is essential that this service is provided as effectively in Irish as in English, particularly given the much greater interest in, and commitment to, the Irish language among the young generation. It is essential that we reach out to them through the medium of the Irish language and that we provide the service they demand through Irish.

The three radio stations appearing before the Committee tomorrow will discuss the challenges and opportunities facing Irish language broadcasters across the island of Ireland and the support they need to meet their objectives and obligations.”

This meeting will take place in Committee Room 4 at 5pm tomorrow, Tuesday, 30 May 2017.
