Good Friday Committee to discuss Brexit’s effect on Northern Ireland’s environment

The Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement will meet tomorrow, Thursday 01 June 2017 at 2.15pm in Committee Room 2, Leinster House.

The meeting will focus on the implications of Brexit for Northern Ireland's Environment with particular reference to shared cross border issues. The following witnesses will address the Committee:

•    Patrick Casement, Chair, Northern Ireland Environment Link;
•    Michael Ewing, Coordinator, Environmental Pillar;
•    Diane Ruddock, External Affairs Manager, National Trust;
•    Rebecca Hunter, Living Seas Manager, Ulster Wildlife;
•    John Martin, Conservation Team Leader, Land Use & Marine Policy, The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds Northern Ireland.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Chairperson, Kathleen Funchion TD said, “It is important in the ongoing discussion about Brexit and what it will mean for the North, that the environmental impact is not forgotten. The pollution limits and regulations set by the EU have had a significant influence on international environmental law. Our witnesses tomorrow will reiterate the importance of securing guarantees that post Brexit, cross-border environmental co-operation will continue.”
