Communications, Climate Action & Environment Committee to meet with Digital Hub Agency and BAI

3 Jul 2017, 15:33

The Communications, Climate Action and Environment Committee will meet with Paul Holden, chairman designate of the Digital Hub Development Agency at its meeting tomorrow, Tuesday, 4 July 2017. It will also focus on the work of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland.

The agenda for the meeting is:

(i) Engagement with Mr. Paul Holden, chairman designate of the Digital Hub Development Agency;
(ii) Oversight of BAI (Broadcasting Authority of Ireland)

Committee Chairman Hildegarde Naughton TD said: “The Digital Hub provides a campus and collaboration environment for digital, technology and internet companies. Managed by the Digital Hub Development Agency since its establishment in 2003, it is home to almost 100 hundred companies at the forefront of technology and digital media. Tomorrow’s meeting with Mr Holden provides an opportunity for the Committee to assess the approach he proposes to take should he be appointed chair of the Agency. He will have the opportunity to outline what he sees are the challenges and opportunities for the Digital Hub Development Agency in the immediate period ahead and into the future. Our Committee recognises the importance of the work of the agency and we’re looking forward to a productive and informative meeting.”

In the second part of tomorrow’s meeting, the Committee will carry out oversight of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI).

Deputy Naughton said: “The BAI is the regulator of broadcasting in Ireland. Among its functions are licensing radio and television services additional to those provided by RTÉ, TG4 and the Houses of the Oireachtas Channel, as well as making broadcasting codes and rules and monitoring and enforcing compliance of licensed broadcasters with those codes and rules and with their broadcasting contracts. Tomorrow, representatives from the BAI will have an opportunity to outline the priorities for the Authority and Committee Members will have an opportunity to raise any issues they may have on the work of the Authority.”

This meeting starts at 4pm on Tuesday, 4 July 2017 in Committee Room 2, Leinster House. Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
