Vol. 258 No. 13

Fourth Amendment of the Constitution Bill, 1972: First Stage.

I move:

That leave be granted to introduce a Bill entitled an Act to amend the Constitution.

This Bill proposes to extend the voting age to people of 18 years in referenda and in general elections.

Is the Bill opposed?

The Bill is opposed, although I am fully in favour of reducing the voting age. In the circumstances I must oppose the motion at this time.

Since the motion is opposed, pursuant to Standing Order 89 (2) the debate is adjourned to Private Members' Business.

That could be next week, Sir?

It could be.

Agreed and ordered accordingly.
