Delegates at the Vótáil 100 conference in the RIA

The first Vótáil 100 event, a conference entitled Representation, Gender and Politics: Past and Present, was held at the Royal Irish Academy yesterday.

Papers were presented by leading academics including Maria Luddy, Margaret Ward, Senia Pašeta and Mari Takayanagi, senior archivist at the UK Houses of Parliament. Topics included historical perspectives on the suffrage movement and politics and gender today. There was also a panel discussion with six current TDs and Senators on women in Parliament.

Throughout 2018, the Oireachtas will host a programme of commemorative events to mark the centenary of women’s participation in parliamentary politics.
