Committee on Arrangements for Budgetary Scrutiny to meet with Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission

20 Jun 2016, 17:27

The Select Committee on Arrangements for Budgetary Scrutiny will meet with representatives from the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission tomorrow Tuesday, 21st June 2016.

Chair of the Committee, John Paul Phelan TD said: “The Select Committee is a preliminary committee which has been established to examine ways in which the Houses of the Oireachtas and its Committees can engage in the budgetary process so as to exercise influence and achieve accountability. As part of measures to improve debate around, and scrutiny of, budget proposals, members expressed a desire that the Committee should have an input in terms of poverty and equality proofing expenditure and revenue raising measures outlined in budgets. Tomorrow, the Committee will engage with the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission, an independent public body, set up to protect and promote human rights and equality in Ireland.  We will be particularly interested in getting its perspective on how we can bring transparency to policy and budget proofing, whether it be equality, poverty or the impact on regions and regional development.”

This meeting will take place in Committee Room 3, Leinster House at 4pm tomorrow, Tuesday, 21st June.

Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
