Employment Affairs & Social Protection Committee continues discussions on public services card

21 Feb 2018, 14:27

The Joint Committee on Employment Affairs and Social Protection will resume its discussions on the public services card at its meeting on Thursday, 22 January 2018.

Appearing before the Committee are officials from the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection and the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform.

Committee Chair John Curran said: “The Public Services Card was introduced by the Department of Social Protection in 2012 to allow for easier access to public services. However, concerns have been raised about the card and whether it is now deemed compulsory for a range of services and about the storing of biometric data on the card. Therefore it is important that we have an open public discussion about the card and its role in society. Tomorrow we will continue our examination of the public services card when we meet with officials from the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection and the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform, the two Departments with direct responsibility for the card.”

This meeting will start at 10.30am on Thursday, 22 February 2018 in Committee Room 4, Leinster House. Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
