Culture, Heritage & Gaeltacht Committee to discuss Arts and Irish

27 Feb 2018, 15:08

The Committee on Culture, Heritage & Gaeltacht will continue its hearings on arts in society when it concentrates on arts and the Irish language at its meeting on Wednesday, 28 February 2018.

Cathaoirleach of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Peadar Tóibín TD said: “The Committee will resume its series of hearings in relation to the arts in society tomorrow. The meeting will focus on the Arts and the Irish language when we will meet with representatives from Foras na Gaeilge, Údarás na Gaeltachta, An Chomhairle Ealaíon agus Fibín Teo. The Irish language, both written and spoken, is an important part of our cultural and artistic heritage with a rich tradition of storytelling, drama, folklore and art. The arts are also a vital tool in sustaining and developing the Irish language and provide an important creative avenue for the Irish-speaking community. Tomorrow, we will have an opportunity to examine the arts and Irish in greater detail as part of our hearings.

“In the second part of our meeting, third-level education on Sherkin Island, Co Cork will be on the agenda when we will meet with representatives from Sherkin Island Development Society, Cork County Council and Officials from the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht.”

This meeting will start at 1.30pm on Wednesday 28 February 2018 in Committee Room 4, Leinster House. Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
