Committee on Mental Health Care to resume discussion of recruitment and retention of staff

6 Mar 2018, 17:27

The Joint Committee on the Future of Mental Health Care will meet tomorrow at 1.30pm in Committee Room 4, Leinster House.

Committee Chair, Senator Joan Freeman, said, “Tomorrow the Committee will hear from representatives from the Irish Hospital Consultants Association and the College of Psychiatrists of Ireland on the subject of recruitment and retention in mental health services. More must be done to attract staff to work in our mental health services and to end the flow of highly qualified professionals leaving to work abroad rather than in the Irish health system. Psychiatric personnel face particular stresses and challenges in their day to day work and appropriate supports must be available to them. Urgent action is needed by government to provide real and substantial funding to the hugely stretched mental health services across the country.”
