Houses of the Oireachtas Commission announces enhanced internship programme in Leinster House

19 Apr 2018, 09:47

The Houses of the Oireachtas Commission agreed at its meeting this week to enhance and develop the current programme of internship in the Houses of the Oireachtas.

The Houses of the Oireachtas currently hosts 68 interns per annum through the Official Internship Programme, in association with the Institute of Public Administration (IPA) and the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT). The provision of internships provides a unique work experience to students of politics in a Parliament as well as benefitting the Members of the Houses of the Oireachtas.

It was agreed that the programme will be developed by providing additional support to our current providers and by prioritising access to other colleges and a disability access programme. Initially the programme will be expanded on a pilot basis by the provision of an additional 5 places which will be allocated to interns from selected courses in UCC, UL and NUIG.

KARE and WALK promote training schemes for people with intellectual disabilities and have developed programmes which aim to assist people with disabilities prepare for employment opportunities. The Houses of the Oireachtas Service will collaborate with KARE and WALK to pilot a joint access scheme for 10 people with intellectual disabilities, scheduled to commence in September 2018.
