Vol. 498 No. 4

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Frances Fitzgerald

Ceist:

408 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will appoint a full-time remedial teacher to St. Brigid's primary school, Haddington Road, Dublin 4; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28159/98]

Ruairí Quinn

Ceist:

411 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will appoint a full-time remedial teacher to St. Brigid's girls national school, Haddington Road, Dublin 4, which has at least 70 per cent of its pupils from deprived areas with high unemployment, crime rates and drug problems, in view of the fact the school has no remedial language teacher for fifth and sixth classes and no remedial maths teacher at any level; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27320/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 408 and 411 together.

The Deputies will be aware that I recently announced a major initiative to tackle educational disadvantage at all levels. As part of this initiative, I have arranged for a remedial teacher service to be made available to all primary schools with effect from September 1999.

I will continue to review the position regarding schools which are already included in the remedial service. I can assure the Deputies that the needs of St. Brigid's NS will be considered in this context.
