Report of the Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution

The Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution has published its final report. The committee was established to consider the report and recommendations of the Citizens’ Assembly on the eighth amendment of the Constitution.

The main conclusion of the committee’s report is that Article 40.3.3° should be removed from the Constitution.

“The key change we want to make is to modernise healthcare by placing the woman at the centre of it,” said Senator Catherine Noone, Chairman of the committee, in her foreword to the report. “What I have learnt over the last three months is that every situation is unique and the evidence has shown that medical practitioners do not feel supported by the law in providing necessary care for the women of Ireland.”
