Finance Committee to focus on consumer protection aspect of Tracker Mortgage issue

6 Noll 2017, 15:03

The Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach will meet tomorrow at 9.30am in Committee Room 2, Leinster House.

The meeting will focus on matters relating to the Tracker Mortgage Examination and the Consumer Protection Framework.

Mr Ger Deering, Financial Services Ombudsman, and Ms Isolde Goggin, Chairperson, Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, will appear before the Committee.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Chairman, John McGuinness TD, said today, “The tracker mortgage scandal highlighted serious deficiencies in consumer protection oversight for those wrongly removed from their tracker. Tomorrow, the Committee will engage with the Financial Services Ombudsman and the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, both of which have a consumer protection mandate for customers of financial institutions. Complaints have been made against financial institutions regarding customer access to personal data and missing files relating to those parties wrongly moved off their tracker mortgages. Tomorrow the Committee will review whether existing consumer protection legislative framework is fit for purpose and what changes need to be made to improve it.”
