Finance Committee to resume discussion of Paradise Papers

13 Noll 2017, 12:40

The Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach will meet tomorrow at 9.30am in Committee Room 2, Leinster House.

Mr. Bernard Byrne, Chief Executive Officer of AIB, will engage with the Committee on taxation matters arising from the publication of the Paradise Papers.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Chairman, John McGuinness TD, said, “The publication of the Paradise Papers revealed how corporations and high-earning individuals moved their incomes around the world to avoid paying high rates of tax. Tomorrow the Committee will engage with the CEO of AIB on the revelations that the bank assisted clients in avoiding tax by off-shoring data and funds. The Paradise Papers also showed that AIB declined to give the Revenue Commissioners access to data on its offshore customers when responding to a court order in 2015. The discovery that a state-owned bank - one which was bailed out by the Irish taxpayer after the financial crash - would have engaged in activities that facilitated tax avoidance is of great concern to the Finance Committee and again raises concerns regarding the culture operating within financial institutions.”
