Education Committee to focus on apparent shortage of substitute teachers

The apparent shortage of substitute teachers throughout the State and issues related to the recruitment and retention of teachers will be on the agenda of the Committee on Education and Skills at its meeting on Tuesday, 20 February 2018.

Attending the meeting are: Ger Curtain, President, Association of Secondary Teachers Ireland (ASTI), Deirdre O’Connor, Assistant General Secretary, Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (INTO), Paul Byrne, Past-President, National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals (NAPD), Pairic Clerkin, CEO, Irish Primary Principals’ Network (IPPN), Seamus Mulconry, General Secretary, Catholic Primary Schools Management Association (CPSMA), Breda Corr, General Secretary, National Association of Boards of Management in Special Education (NABMSE), Dónal Ó hAiniféin, Cathaoirleach, An Chomhairle um Oideachas Gaeltachta agus Gaelscolaíochta (COGG), Tomás Ó Ruairc, Director, The Teaching Council, Joan Russell, Director of School Support Services, Education and Training Boards Ireland (ETBI.

Committee Chair Fiona O’Loughlin, TD said: “Concerns have been raised about the apparent lack of substitute teachers with some schools reporting difficulties finding teachers to provide substitute cover and in some cases to teach certain subjects. Recruitment and retention of teachers are central to having a properly-functioning, top-class education system. Tomorrow we will meet with a variety of stakeholders and interested parties to examine these issues, consider the reasons behind the apparent shortages and discuss possible measures to address the matter.”
