The Joint Committee on Justice and Equality will continue its hearings on Garda Síochána oversight and accountability on Wednesday 21 March 2018 when it meets with Josephine Feehily, Chairperson, Policing Authority and Mark Toland, Chief Inspector, Garda Síochána Inspectorate.

Committee Chairman Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD said: “Tomorrow’s meeting provides the Committee with an opportunity to revisit our report on Garda Oversight and Accountability 2016 with two key bodies with a remit in this area – the Policing Authority and the Garda Síochána Inspectorate. The role of the Policing Authority is to enhance public confidence by independently overseeing the performance of the Garda Síochána in relation to policing, while the objectives of the Garda Síochána Inspectorate is to ensure that the resources available to the Garda Síochána are used to maintain and achieve the highest levels of effectiveness and efficiency in its operation and administration as measured against best international practice. Tomorrow we will discuss our report with both bodies and look at progress in implementing its recommendations on this subject. Members will also address issues regarding the Homicide Review to the Policing Authority’s Ms Feehily.”
