Vol. 55 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Purchase of Fat Cattle.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether any representations have been made to him that there is a desire in the country that the Government should make it compulsory on all victuallers to buy their supplies of fat cattle from Government inspectors and from no other source, and whether it is the intention of the Government to introduce proposals for legislation for this purpose.

Dr. Ryan

Representations have been made to me on the lines referred to by the Deputy. The question whether legislation should be introduced in order to give effect to the suggestion mentioned is at present under consideration.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, I would like to ask if the consideration he is giving to these suggestions is in any way connected with the fact that victuallers are unable to get any money out of the Department in respect of meat supplies to indigent persons under the Act?

Dr. Ryan

That is a very erroneous impression to give to the House or to the country when about 80 or 85 per cent. of the claims are paid up to date Those who do not give proper returns are not being paid.

So that I can inform any victualler that any delay arises through some fault of his in filling up the requisite returns?
