Vol. 58 No. 2

Committee on Finance. - Suspension of Deputy.

(An Ceann Comhairle resumed the Chair.)

Answering a statement made by Deputy Flinn, Deputy Morrissey said that the Chair would not rule Deputy Flinn out of order, whether he was out of order or not. I indicated to Deputy Morrissey that he was entitled to hold the opinion that Deputy Flinn was out of order, but that he should not, by expression or implication, say that the Chair would not rule Deputy Flinn out of order if the Chair thought he was out of order. I asked Deputy Morrissey to withdraw the statement. He refused to do so and I sent for you, Sir, to have the Deputy suspended.

I shall have to ask Deputy Morrissey to leave the House for the remainder of the sitting.

Will you allow me to explain?

There cannot be any explanation. The Chair must accept the report of the Leas-Cheann Comhairle.

In view of all the circumstances, and that I objected before at 8.40, and that the Deputy proceeded until 10 o'clock, I am sorry that I cannot.

An Cheann Comhairle

I must, therefore, name the Deputy.

In accordance with the Standing Orders, I move that Deputy Morrissey be suspended from the service of the House.

Question put: "That Deputy Morrissey be suspended from the service of the Dáil."
