Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment Statistics.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the total number of persons employed on the 1st March, 1935, in the manufacture of: (1) tobacco; (2) boots and shoes; (3) soap and candles; (4) sugar confectionery, including jam; (5) brush-making; (6) shirt-making; (7) blanket-making; (8) hosiery; (9) wholesale clothing (namely, men's and boys' factory-made clothing, etc.); (10) furniture; (11) oatmeal; (12) margarine; (13) woollens; (14) glass bottles; (15) metallic beds; (16) down quilts; (17) rosary beads; and the number of separate businesses in respect of which this enumeration of employment is made.

The reply is in the form of a tabular statement, which will be circulated in the Official Debates.

Following is the reply:—

The total number of persons employed on the 1st March, 1935, in the industries mentioned in the question, and the number of separate businesses in respect of which employment figures are quoted were as follows:—

Tobacco—Persons employed, 2,198; number of firms, 16.

Boots and Shoes—Persons employed, 3,296; number of firms, 18.

Soap and Candles—Persons employed, 703; number of firms, 16.

Sugar Confectionery (including jam) —Persons employed, 5,450; number of firms, 60.

Brushmaking — Persons employed, 392; number of firms, 23.

Shirts and Collars—Persons employed, 2,125; number of firms, 42.

Blankets, Blanketing and Rugs (other than floor rugs)—Persons employed, 536; number of firms, 23.

Hosiery and Knitted Goods—Persons employed, 3,665; number of firms, 60.

Wholesale Clothing (viz., men's and boys' factory-made clothing, hats, caps, ties and umbrellas)—Persons employed. 4,837; number of firms, 78.

Furniture—Persons employed, 1,796; number of firms, 156.

Oatmeal—Persons employed, 656; number of firms, 99.

Margarine—Persons employed, 181; number of firms, 3.

Woollens and Worsteds — Persons employed, 1,956; number of firms, 27.

Quilts and Quilt Covers—Persons employed, 73; number of firms, 4.

Glass Bottles; Metallic Bedsteads; Rosary Beads — Persons employed, 340; number of firms, 1; 2; 2.

Separate particulars of employment in the glass bottle, metallic bedstead and rosary bead industries could not be given without disclosing information concerning the businesses of individual firms.
