Vol. 65 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing Conditions on Carter Estate (Mayo).

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware of the housing conditions on the Carter estate in the Barony of Erris; and whether his attention has been directed to the fact that in many townlands people are unable to obtain bog on which to cut turf; whether steps have been taken to acquire the estate in question, and, if so, whether it is proposed to commence the dividing of the estate and its improvement.

Mr. Boland

The tenanted portion of the Shaen Carter estate, County Mayo, to which the Deputy appears to refer comprises 605 holdings, all of which were retained for rearrangement when the estate was vested in the Land Commission under Section 9 of the Land Act, 1931. The work of examining this large estate with a view to rearrangement is being taken in hands in sections, and questions of turbary, housing and other requisite improvements will be considered at the same time.

The Shaen Carter estate includes a large area of untenanted land the suitability of which for acquisition and division by the Land Commission will also come under consideration.
