Vol. 89 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Consumption of Anthracite Coal.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he will state in respect of anthracite coal the monthly quantities used during the last six months under permit from his Department in the following categories (a) domestic cooking; (b) cooking in institutions; (c) industry; (d) railways.

The quantities of anthracite authorised to be purchased during each of the last six months under permits granted by my Department for domestic cooking were:—

June

926 tons

July

926 tons

August

1,101 tons

September

1,101 tons

October

1,168 tons

November

1,168 tons

I should make it clear that permits for the purchase of anthracite for domestic cooking have been granted only to persons who have satisfied my Department that they are solely dependent for cooking purposes on anthracite cookers in which no fuel other than anthracite can be used.

As the permits issued by my Department to institutions, industries and the railways do not restrict the permit holders to any particular type of coal, I am not in a position to state the quantities of anthracite, as distinct from other coal, used by them during each of the last six months.
