Vol. 100 No. 17

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Hackney Cars.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state the number of plates issued to hackneycar owners since January 1st, 1943; and the number of those to whom plates were issued since that date who held hackney plates on the 1st January, 1941.

The total number of small public service vehicle licences issued from the 1st January, 1943, to the 18th April, 1946, is 4,376; 3,747 of these licences were in respect of cars replacing licensed vehicles.

Information is not readily available as to how many of the persons who obtained licences since 1st January 1943, held licences on the 1st January, 1941.

Were licences issued for hackney car purposes?

Mr. Boland

For public services. That would be for hackneys.

Is the Minister aware that the authorities in many cases have refused to issue hackney licences?

Mr. Boland

There is confusion on that point. The Department of Industry and Commerce issues permits for extra petrol, but the Gárda Síochána issue hackney licences.
