Vol. 113 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rural Improvement Schemes.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that the proposed rural improvement scheme for a bridge over the river at Dereen, Gort, County Galway (Scheme No. —— Galway 678), has been rejected; that the people in the townland cannot get to the public road except over the bed of the river and that due to the development of forestry and turbary upstream, the river is nearly always in flood, thereby making it extremely dangerous if not impossible to cross; and, if so, whether, in view of the fact that the people concerned are willing to pay their contribution, he will now make arrangements to have this work carried out.

An application under the rural improvements scheme was received for a traffic bridge over the Owendalulleegh River in the townland of Dereen, County Galway. As, however, the utility to be derived from the proposed work would not be commensurate with the cost the application could not be considered for execution under the rural improvements scheme.

Mr. Flynn

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that a rural improvement scheme at Carker, Scartaglin, County Kerry, has been under review by his Department for the past two years, and that the tenants concerned have signed the usual consent form and have agreed to pay their portion of the total cost; and if, in view of the fact that the particular road involved is in an extreme state of disrepair, he will have the work commenced at the earliest possible date.

An application under the rural improvements scheme for repair of a road in the townland of Carker was received in November, 1947, and an inspection was duly carried out. An offer of a grant towards the cost of the scheme conditional on the payment of the appropriate local contribution, is being issued to the applicants' representative.

I am given to understand that they have signed a document in which they have expressed their agreement to pay their quota of the cost in that particular case.

We have offered a grant provided they comply with the Act.

They informed me that they had signed the consent, and they have asked me to inquire further into the matter.

An offer of a grant towards the cost of the scheme conditional on the payment of the local contribution is being issued to the applicants' representative.
