asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the total sums of money paid by Departments of State for advertising in each of the following newspapers from 1st March, 1932, to date (1) The Irish Press; (2) The Irish Independent; (3) The Irish Times; (4) The Cork Examiner, and the total sums paid in repect of advertising in each of the above newspapers (a) from 1st January, 1932, to 18th February, 1948, and (b) from 18th February, 1948, to 18th February, 1951.

I regret that I am unable to give full details on the lines requested by the Deputy. During the late war, certain records not regarded as of a permanent nature were converted to provide material for the manufacture of paper.
As the payments are recorded in monthly totals, it is not possible to provide the information sought as to the position on 18th February, 1948, and the figures supplied, therefore, indicate the position at the nearest convenient date, viz.: 29th February, 1948.
On the basis of such records as are now available, the total sums of money paid by Departments of State for advertising from 1st March, 1932, to date, were as follows in respect of the newspapers mentioned:—
