Vol. 161 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Thurles Telephone Exchange.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the overcrowded conditions in the Thurles telephone exchange, which was the subject of an adverse report by a medical officer; whether he will take immediate steps to alleviate the present conditions; and what steps it is proposed to take to provide a proper exchange.

I am aware that working conditions in the manual switchroom at Thurles post office are not as good as might be desired and steps are being taken to relieve the position pending provision of improved permanent accommodation—a matter which is receiving active attention.

Could the Minister say when the staff in Thurles may look forward to some easement in the situation, which is at present pretty bad?

I am afraid there is little to add to what I have said other than that my Department is actively considering this matter and is fully aware of the conditions under which these people are now working, conditions which we do not agree are ideal.
