Vol. 164 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Civilian Riders in International Jumping Competitions.

asked the Minister for Defence whether, in view of the altered policy adopted by other nations by including civilian riders in jumping teams, he will, in the interests of national prestige and to safeguard the very high world reputation of Irish show-jumping stock, permit the Army authorities to draw on civilian competitors and their horses when choosing their teams for international competitions.

I do not agree that departure from long standing policy such as that suggested by the Deputy is necessary and I do not propose, therefore, to authorise any change.

If it is decided to have a national team composed of riders from all over the 32 Counties, would the Minister have any objection?
