Vol. 167 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Importation of Oats.

asked the Minister for Agriculture why he granted a licence to import foreign oats; and if he will state the name of the person or firm to which he gave the licence.

I reluctantly gave licences for the importation of limited quantities of oats for seed, for oatmeal milling and for feeding to horses because supplies of home-grown oats were not sufficient to meet requirements for these purposes.

Licences for the importation of seed oats were issued to 440 applicants. With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report a list of the names and addresses of recipients of licences to import oats other than seed oats.

Following is the list:—

Is the Minister aware that the various horse trainers all over the country have next year's supply of oats bought in at 55/- per barrel? These are imported oats.

Could the Minister indicate what price was paid for these imported oats?

I am afraid I could not.

Could the Minister state the total quantity imported?

I have not got that either.

Can the Minister not state the price?

The total quantity brought in for seed was 15,000 tons. As well as that, for the oatmeal millers there were 8,400 tons.

Is the Minister not in a position to state the price paid for the imported oats? It seems to be rather relevant to the matter?

The Deputy had better put down another question.

I should like to state to the Minister that these oats are in storage for next year's winter fodder and are not held for seed.
