asked the Minister for Education if he will state the percentage of children in each county and in the cities of Dublin, Limerick, Cork and Galway receiving (a) full-time vocational education and (b) secondary school education.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Vocational and Secondary Education.
Apart from the fact that it is not exactly clear from the terms of the question how the words "percentage of children," should be interpreted, I wish to explain that to obtain full statistics which would enable me to furnish the information requested by the Deputy in relation to children of a particular age-group or groups, it would be necessary (i) to examine the birth record of each pupil in secondary and vocational schools; (ii) to ascertain from each school the home addresses of its pupils, since the school being attended by a particular child and its, home may not be in the same county and (iii) to ascertain the number of children of each age-group in each county. I do not feel that the time and expenditure involved in such a process would be justified.
With a view, however, to assisting the Deputy, I propose to include in the Dáil Reports a table showing the number of pupils (a) from each county who were in attendance at secondary schools and (b) in each of the areas mentioned by the Deputy who were in attendance at full-time courses in vocational schools, in the school-year 1956-57.
Following is the table:—
TABLE showing, in respect of the school-year 1956-57, (a) number of pupils from each county who were in attendance at secondary schools; (b) number of pupils in each of the areas indicated who were in attendance at full-time courses in vocational schools.
