Vol. 172 No. 9

Personal Explanation by Minister.

Before Deputy Larkin speaks, I am allowing the Minister for Local Government to intervene on a personal matter.

During the course of the debates on the Third Amendment of the Constitution Bill, I was accused amongst other things, of falsehood when I denied a statement which it was alleged I made in this House, when I replied to a Fine Gael Deputy on 7th January, namely: "If this referendum goes through, Fine Gael will have had it." I wish to draw your attention, Sir, to the fact that the records of this House show that the words I used in reply to an interruption by an Opposition Deputy were: "Because, according to himself"—that is, the interrupting Deputy —"and his Party, if this goes through, they have no future."

In certain newspaper reports and in an editorial, the qualifying clause: "Because, according to himself and his Party" was omitted; and thus a completely fallacious twist was given to my words.

I understand, Sir, that the Dáil Office can vouch for the accuracy of the Official Reports.
