asked the Taoiseach the number of persons in insurable employment at the end of each quarter in the last six years.

With your permission, Sir, I propose to circulate in the Official Report, a statement giving the estimated average numbers in insurable employment, based on the numbers of social insurance stamps sold, in the 12 months period ending March, June, September and December for each of the years 1957 to 1962. The averages are given for 12 monthly periods as not all the stamps sold in a particular quarter relate to employment in that quarter. This particularly affects sales in the first quarter of each calendar year when insurance cards for males are exchanged. In using such data it must be noted that changes in the upper salary limit for compulsory insurance of non-manual workers and changes in their income levels affect the coverage of the figures.
