Vol. 223 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Private Business Direction Signs.

26.

asked the Minister for Local Government if it is in order for direction signs indicating private businesses to be fixed to local authority signposts; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I assume the Deputy has in mind a fingerpost sign similar to an informative direction sign as authorised under section 95 of the Road Traffic Act, 1961. If such a sign, while indicating the way to a hotel or the like, in fact facilitates the public by indicating, particularly in a remote area, the direction to take, there is no objection to a local authority permitting the use of their signpost for the erection of the sign. If the sign amounts merely to an advertising sign, it would be wrong for the local authority to allow its attachment to a signpost erected for traffic signs. Apart from whether a local authority signpost is used or not permission must be obtained under the Road Traffic Act, 1961, and the Local Government (Planning and Development) Act, 1963.
