Vol. 226 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shorthorn Cattle Foundation Stock.

26.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will consider subsidising the dairy shorthorn calf in order to encourage stable national shorthorn foundation stock; if he has examined this matter; and when he hopes to be in a position to grant such a subsidy.

Despite the fact that the shorthorn breed has been given particular consideration, such as bull premiums at the highest rate and artificial inseminations at a lower fee than for other breeds, the number of shorthorn bulls licensed and the inseminations by shorthorn bulls have declined substantially in recent years. I do not consider that the Deputy's suggestion would have any marked effect on the present trend.
