Vol. 226 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Central European Time.

47.

asked the Minister for Justice if, in view of this country's co-operation with the Council of Europe, he will now consider adopting central European time all the year around in Ireland.

Central European Time is the same as our Summer Time and its adoption in present circumstances would mean that for about half the year our time would be an hour in advance of that in Britain.

It is of more practical importance for this country to preserve uniformity of time with Britain than with continental countries.

There is, in any case, no evidence of any public demand for a change of the kind advocated and I do not consider that any change should be made in the absence of such a demand.

Would the time not be an hour behind ours here? Would we not be an hour behind if this proposal were adopted?

Yes; that is right.

Deputy Lemass did not realise Fianna Fáil are always behind when he put down the question. He did not realise he would be exposed by the Minister for Justice.

The trouble is that you people are going forwards and backwards at the same time.
