Vol. 227 No. 5

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Pig Feed.

21.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware that pig feed is not available at a price which enables farmers to raise pigs economically; and if any discussions took place between An Bord Gráin, the Pigs and Bacon Commission and the bacon curers' association on this matter.

The arrangements for the importation and distribution of coarse grains are designed to ensure that pig feed is available to producers at the lowest possible cost and I do not accept that the prices at which such feed is available do not permit of economic pig production. So far as I am aware, there has been no recent discussion about this matter between the three bodies mentioned by the Deputy.

May I ask is it not a pity that there is not such a discussion?

Of course, you may ask it.

And that it would probably lead to better results if it did take place?
