Vol. 227 No. 5

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Restoration of Driving Licences.

82.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of drivers' licences which have been restored, before the expiry of the period of disqualification originally ordered by the court, to persons convicted of drunken driving during the period 1st April 1961 to 31st December 1966.

Separate court statistics are not kept in relation to orders removing disqualifications under section 29 of the Road Traffic Act, 1961, and I do not consider that the expenditure of public time involved in extracting the information required from the court records throughout the country would be warranted.

Has the Minister for Justice in Ireland power to restore a driver's licence in any case where it has not been withdrawn as a result of a conviction for drunken driving?

No. The Minister for Justice has no power in regard to removal of any form of suspension of driving licence for any offence under the road traffic code.
