Vol. 233 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Purchase of Turf-Cutting Machine.

13.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if a machine costing approximately £40,000 was purchased for turf-cutting at Ballydermot bog, Rathangan, County Kildare last year; if this machine only worked for a few weeks and has now been scrapped; and, if so, if he will give the explanation.

This matter relates to the day to day administration of Bord na Móna but, because of the implication of gross inefficiency on their part implied in the question, I have had inquiries made of the Board. They have informed me that no turf-cutting or other machine costing £40,000 was purchased for Ballydermot bog last year and that no machine was scrapped there after working for a few weeks.

How much did the machine cost?

My information is that the turf-cutting machines in use at Ballydermot were purchased many years ago at a cost of £10,000 each and are still in operation.

No machine was bought last year?

That is right.

Everybody working at Ballydermot has a different view.
