Vol. 233 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Limerick County Development Area.

52.

asked the Minister for Finance if he now considers it feasible to designate the entire county of Limerick as a development area; and, if not, why.

The Government has recently established a Development Team to assist in the economic development of West Limerick, this being an area of predominantly small farms adjoining Kerry, West Cork and Clare where there are also Development Teams. I recognise that the rest of County Limerick, and indeed other parts of the country, also have problems arising from the existence of small farms but I do not think that these problems are as great as those in West Limerick and in other western counties. In the circumstances, I cannot agree to the Deputy's suggestion.

County Limerick is of course included in the pilot areas covered by the Small Industries Programme and the county development officer who acts as secretary of the West Limerick team is the local liaison officer dealing with applications for assistance under that Programme from businesses in County Limerick as a whole.
