Dr. Browne, Mr. M. O'Leary

andDr. O'Connell asked the Minister for Finance the total sum paid in the years 1950 to 1960 and in the most recent year available in taxes on cigarette tobacco in the Republic.

The answer includes a tabular statement and I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to circulate it with the Official Report.

The bulk of the tobacco revenue is derived from raw leaf imported for manufacture into cigarettes, pipe tobaccos and other products. The duties on the leaf are collected without reference to end use and it is not possible to furnish accurate statistics of the duty receipts from cigarettes. The following figures, therefore, represent estimates of the amount of tobacco revenue attributable to cigarettes. The figures include receipts from imported cigarettes.
