Vol. 250 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Reclamation (County Wexford).

31.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries whether there is a slowing down in land reclamation work in the south Wexford area; and if, in view of the loss of employment to those engaged in this work, he will state the reasons why.

The issue of approved schemes of work under the Land Project in the south Wexford area in recent months was somewhat held up due mainly to urgent seasonal inspections under the Beef Cattle Incentive Bonus Scheme and also to absence of a senior officer on sick leave and the resignation of one of the staff in the area. I am not, however, aware that loss of employment resulted. The issue of approved schemes in the area has increased considerably in the last couple of weeks and I expect the position to be back to normal very shortly.

Is the Minister aware that, as I have been told, contractors are held up there for want of inspection and approval by the local office?

We have no such information but, as I said in my original reply, the position is now restored to normal.

Is the Minister aware that they told one contractor land reclamation could not be approved because they were short of a typist, whatever a typist had to do with it?

Typists also have a part to play.

I know that, but will the Minister check up on it again?
