Vol. 257 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Income Tax Allowances.

66.

asked the Minister for Finance the estimated amount of income tax relief in respect of mortgage interest on dwellings for a recent year.

I would invite the Deputy's attention to the reply given to a similar question by Deputy O'Connell on 16th November, 1971.

67.

asked the Minister for Finance why the net tax-free allowances of a person (name supplied) were reduced following the 1971 Budget.

The tax-free allowances of the person in question were reduced following the 1971 Budget as a result of the general withdrawal of the reduced rate relief on the first £100 of taxable income. However, portion of his allowances was used to off-set the full tax liability in respect of his social welfare retirement pension so that it could be paid without deduction of tax. Only the balance of the allowances was accordingly available to set against his other income.
