Vol. 260 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Crime Detection.

65.

asked the Minister for Justice the total number of murders committed in this country for the two year period ended 31st March, 1972; the detection rate for these crimes; and the number of convictions resulting from such detections.

Twenty-eight deaths which occurred in the period in question are regarded by the Garda as murders. Detections have been made in 22 cases. Of these 22 detections, five were cases in which the Garda were satisfied that the deaths were caused by persons who, by reason of their mental condition, could not be held responsible for their actions. As regards the remaining cases, seven have resulted in convictions and eight are still before the courts.
