Vol. 270 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Population Redistribution.

46.

asked the Minister for Local Government if the Government have any plans for the redistribution of the Irish population.

The Government have no plans for the compulsory movement of population.

Surely the Minister should have some interest in this matter since he is the Minister in charge of planning. It is desirable that population move from the more densely populated areas in order that there be a sense of balance.

Is the Deputy suggesting that we should move population compulsorily?

No. That was the policy of the first Coalition.

An effort in that regard was made by the previous Government but it did not work very well.
