Vol. 271 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Redundancies.

5.

asked the Minister for Labour if he is aware of forthcoming redundancies in a mill in County Cork (name supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Minister's Department have not been notified of any impending redundancies in the firm in question.

Arising out of the Parliamentary Secretary's reply, which I regard as satisfactory, could I ask him if the Minister has made any inquiry whether or not this will be the position?

The information I have is to the effect that no redundancies have been notified or are, in the word the Deputy uses, forthcoming.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary not agree that if such redundancies are forthcoming it should be the function of the Department of Labour to carry out an investigation to consider the position of these people and not to wait until the thing has happened?

I agree if they were forthcoming and redundancies were known to the Minister it might be his job to take an interest in them. However I have told the Deputy they are not known to be forthcoming.

I am now informing the Parliamentary Secretary that such is the case. I am asking if the Department of Labour will investigate the situation.

It may be that the Deputy has more information than the Minister has. If so I am certain the Minister would be interested to have whatever information the Deputy can give him.
