Vol. 274 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mercury Level in Fish.

8.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if his attention has been drawn to a report (details supplied) to the effect that the level of mercury found in fish caught in the Irish sea is above the normal level; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have seen the article in question which gives the levels of mercury concentrations in fish within certain parts of the coasts of Great Britain and Ireland based on British Government surveys. The article indicated concern that in some areas of the eastern Irish Sea the mercury concentrations were much higher that for the remainder of the Irish Sea, particularly the western or Irish side. Nevertheless the article concluded that only if fish from the areas of concern was eaten in much larger quantities than usual would the consumer's mercury intake approach the safety maximum suggested by the World Health Organisation.

My Department have already recognised the need to monitor the concentrations of heavy metals, including mercury, in fish and shellfish and as indicated in my reply to a parliamentary question on 16th May, 1974, existing arrangements for such work are at present being extended and improved.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary state when he expects to get the results of the tests? Did I understand him correctly that his Department are conducting their own survey in regard to the present situation?

The Department regard this as a serious matter. We have plans to equip and staff a temporary heavy metal analysis laboratory at Dunmore East pending the siting and erection of the proposed new general fish research laboratory. We expect that the Dunmore East arrangement will give an adequate interim service for both our national and international commitments in this matter.

When is it expected that this service will be in operation?

I expect this service to be in operation straight-away. It is a matter of some urgency and is so considered by the Department.
