Vol. 356 No. 4

Written Answers. - Remedial Teachers.

608.

asked the Minister for Education the total number of remedial teachers in post-primary schools as sanctioned by her Department; the number who did not acquire their training and qualification in this country; and, of these, the nature of their training and qualifications and where it was acquired.

There are 200 ex-quota remedial teachers in post-primary schools. In addition many post-primary schools employ teachers within their approved quota who have been trained in the area of remedial education. Precise information is not readily available on the extent to which the latter teachers are engaged in remedial work.

It is estimated that all but 30 of the remedial teachers in the post-primary schools acquired their training in the special courses organised by my Department. Details of the training of those trained outside the country are not readily available.
