Vol. 361 No. 2

Written Answers. - Curriculum Reform.

39.

asked the Minister for Education if she is aware that recently published responsible data have definitely established that unfavourable pupil-teacher ratio and lack of resources for in-service teacher training courses are the greatest deterrents to curriculum reform; and the practical plans she has for the implementation country-wide of the recent findings of the Curriculum and Examinations Board.

I am not sure about what data the Deputy is referring to. The questions of the pupil-teacher ratio and the provision of in-service education are of course relevant to curriculum reform. They are not the only factors involved however. I am satisfied that it is possible to make progress within the present pupil-teacher ratios and we will be working to improve those ratios as soon as financial circumstances permit.

The importance of in-service teacher training courses was recognised in the Programme for Action in Education 1984-1987, and I have made significant increases in the funds provided for such courses.

The papers published recently by the Curriculum and Examinations Board are discussion documents. The board have invited comments by 30 November 1985, and these will be considered by the board before final recommendations are made to me. The question of implementation does not arise at this stage.
