Vol. 363 No. 4

Written Answers. - Casual Trading Fee.

45.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism if he will reconsider his decision to increase the casual trading licence fee and reduce it to £100 again since the recent increase endangers the livelihood of many traditional traders whose families have traded in the Cornmarket Street and Coal Quay area of Cork for generations; and whose incomes do not justify such a hefty licence fee.

The original fee of £100 was prescribed in section 4 (1) of the Casual Trading Act, 1980. That fee was increased, by regulation, to £175 with effect from 7 January 1985. In fact, that increase was less than would have been justified by reference to the intervening level of inflation. Accordingly, I consider that the present fee should stand.
