47.

asked the Minister for the Environment the number of tenants of Dublin County Council who have surrendered their dwellings and obtained the grant of £5,000; and the number of such applications pending.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 46 and 47 together. The processing of applications for the £5,000 surrender grant is a matter for the appropriate housing authority up to the stage of certification for payment. Certificates for payment of the grant are provided by the housing authority in whose functional area the house being purchased is situated and this is not necessarily the housing authority to which the applicant's original dwelling has been surrendered. For these reasons, the Department's records do not include details of the number of tenants who have surrendered their dwellings to a particular authority or the number of applications pending in the area of a particular authority. The numbers of grants paid to date in respect of private houses built or purchased with the aid of the £5,000 grant, in the functional areas of Dublin Corporation and Dublin County Council are 280 and 958 respectively.
